This is more or less a “Top Firefox Addons” post, but pretty much our entire selection of Firefox extensions are geared towards web design/development, so that’s what I’m calling it. I couldn’t really do what I do without Firefox, or at least it would be considerably more difficult. While I have much respect for browsers like Opera and Mozilla, the extensions available for Firefox are what really make it my browser of choice.

Having spit out several Wordpress custom sites in the last few days, I thought I’d detail my current workflow on my Macintosh OSX platform for posterity. It’s changed a little since the last time I wrote about it, and I feel like it’s at a point where, with some minor tweaking and a few more TextMate commands, it could be an ideal production environment for individuals and small groups.

For these instructions, it is assumed that your blog’s URL is http://example.com/wordpress/. Note that during the upgrade process access to your blog may not work for your visitors. You may consider a plugin like Maintenance Mode.
Step 0: Before You Get Started
* Just in case something goes wrong, make sure you have a backup. WordPress_Backups is a comprehensive guide.
* Deactivate your plugins. A plugin might not be compatible with the new version, so it’s nice to check for new versions of them and deactivate any that may cause problems. You can reactivate plugins one-by-one after the upgrade.

WordPress bloggers that have recently upgraded to WordPress version 2.2 may encounter strange character set or charset encoding problems where apostrophes, hyphens, quotation marks and dashes appear or are displayed in posts and pages as strange characters like ’, �., or even as simple ? (question marks). The symptom is obvious, your WordPress posts or pages will contains garbled, weird and funny characters, sometime just lots of ????? (question marks), rendering the WordPress database with your hard work useless and output unreadable. For many bloggers this problem can quickly become very frustrating. But before you revert back to an earlier version or wipe out and reinstall your database please read ahead as the solution is not so complicated.
